If there was anything common among the stories of all the children Mark had taught over the last twenty-two years, it was the monsters hiding under their beds or in their closets.
It had become a tradition on the Halloween Eve, instead of the same boring exercises of arithmetic or grammar, to assign them to draw the monsters that were stalking them, in an attempt to exorcise their fears.
All these years, not a single kid had handed him in a blank paper - except Helen. He found her in the breaktime, alone on a bench, with her head bowed and her legs hanging. He stood beside her.
"You didn't show me your monster," he said with a smile.
"I'm not afraid of the monsters hiding under my bed," she replied in a low voice.
"Brave girl!" Mark admired. "And what are you afraid of, then?"
"My dad," said Helen, subconsciously touching her arm.
